Google “Me on the Web” online reputation tool

By Geoff Duncan
Provided by

Google's new "Me on the Web" tool aims to help users monitor their personal information on the Web - you just have to give Google that information first.

As the Internet and social networking have evolved, many people are concerned about what search engines and tools churn up when people search for their names or other information online. If you're applying to a university or for a job, a photo of you setting fire to a police car in downtown Vancouver is probably the last thing you want people to see. Or maybe Facebook's automatic face detection system "accidentally" identifies you amid a crowd of drunken revelers the day before you apply for a business loan. Online reputation management isn't just about being in control of what you post about yourself, but knowing about (and responding to) what others post about you. Savvy Internet users have "egosurfed" for years by conducting searches on their own personal information, and many set up automated searches and alerts to send them notices if their names or other details appear in new places on the Web.

Now, Google is taking a small step to bring those tools to the masses with "Me on the Web," a new component of Google Dashboard that enables users to monitor details of their identity on the Web and get informed when new things pop up. Me on the Web enables users to set up Google Alerts for their names, email addresses, and other personal data that appear on the Web, social networking services, or news stories. Google is also linking to information and resources about trying to control third-party information about you.

Of course, one catch to this system is that users have to have a Google account and public profile—which means turning over some portion of their personal data to Google. Google takes information users enter into their public profile and automates the process of setting up alerts to let users know when that information appears elsewhere on the Web. Google has no concept of a private profile: Google profiles are visible to the world, any anyone with a user's email address can discover them.

With privacy breaches becoming seemingly commonplace amongst businesses and Internet companies, there's some irony in being required to disclose personal information to manage privacy and reputation. Fundamentally, Google's "Me on the Web" isn't any different than doing queries via a search engine—after all, entering your own name into a search form is the same as handing it over to a search engine operator. One difference, however, is that Me on the Web—and Google's profiles—collect all that information in one place. The security- and privacy-conscious usually go to efforts to make sure their ego-surfing doesn't trace back to any one point.

"This is just one of our first steps in continuing to explore ways to help make managing your identity online simpler," Google product manager Andreas Tuerk wrote in a blog post. Here's hoping there are many more larger steps soon.

Use these definitions for Google AdWords™ terms to better understand the terminology found on the AdWords web site and in Google’s AdWords reports

The AdWords Hierarchy
Campaign – Defines the daily budget, language, geographic scope and the networks where ads are displayed.

Networks where ads are displayed:

  • Google Search – Ads displayed on search results pages in Google web site.
  • Search Network – Ads displayed on Google search partner sites, which includes Google Groups and search sites such as Ask.com and AOL.
  • Display Network – Formerly called the Content Network, this network consists of context-driven ads displayed on non-Google sites through the Google AdSense affiliate network.
Ad Group – A group of ads within a Campaign that are focused on a set of closely related keyword phrases.

Ad – An individual Google ad within an Ad Group. Ad Groups can contain numerous text ads with different ad wording.

Google Report Terminolog Avg. CPC – The average cost-per-click that has been charged.

Estimated Average  Cost-per-click (CPC)
The system predicts the average cost each time a user clicks your ad on the associated keyword. The cost is specific to the position range shown in the Estimated Ad Positio column.

Avg. Pos – The average rank position for an ad.

Estimated Ad Position - This column displays the range of positions likely to show your ad when a user searches on the associated keyword.

Campaign Daily Budget – The daily spending limit for an entire campaign. When the daily budget limit is reached, ads cease to display until the next day.

Clicks – The number of users who have been sent to a site because they clicked on an ad.

Content Total – The number of clicks, cost and other statistics related to ads displayed on non-Google sites through the Google AdSense affiliate Content Network.

Conv. Rate – The conversion rate based upon a snippet of Google code added to a Web page. The code is most commonly added to an order confirmation page or a thank you page following an e-mail form submission. This indicates the percentage of users who clicked on an ad and followed through with an order or a request for information.

Cost – Actual cost charged for clicks. Cost is displayed for Ad Campaigns, Ad Groups, Search Total, Content Total and individual keywords.

Cost/Conv. – The average cost for converting a user who clicks on an ad into a customer or for someone who requests further information. Requires a snippet of Google code to be added to an order confirmation or thank you page following an e-mail form submission or order submission page.

CTR – The click-through-rate of clicks divided by impressions. A CTR greater than 0.5% is considered to be average. A CTR of 2% or better is very good.

Current Bid – If you opt for bids on individual keyword phrases this column will display to show the current bid for each.

Current Status – The current status for a Campaign or an Ad Group. Active means ads are displaying, Paused means that ads have been manually disabled.

Destination URL – The actual URL of the page that an ad links to. This must be part of the same domain as the one shown in the display URL.

Display URL – The URL shown on an ad. This does not have to be the same page URL as the destination URL, but it must represent the site being linked to.

Impr. – The number of impressions, which means the number of times an ad has displayed based upon either a user’s search using a keywords phrase (Search network) or based upon the content found on a page for a site that is part of the Google AdSense program (Content network).

Keyword – An individual keyword or keyword phrase assigned to an Ad Group.

Keyword Matching Options – There are several different methods for targeting AdWords ads to more precisely match the ads to the intended search keywords.

  • Broad Match – The default option for your keywords. With no special characters surrounding the keyword phrase, AdWords ads should display when users search using any of the words in a keyword phrase and possibly with other words that may be used in the search. At one time a broad match meant that all of the words in a keyword phrase needed to be part of the search, but that was changed to any of the words in a keyword phrase. This is an important reason as to why broad match keywords should only be used on a limited basis. The problem with a broad match is that ANY word in a phrase can be used to trigger an ad. In other words, if you targeted search phrase is ‘Phoenix ticket sales’, any search using the word ‘Phoenix’, ‘ticket’ or ‘sales’ can trigger the display of an ad.
  • +Modified +Broad +Match – This is much improved version of the broad match. With a modified broad match, a plus sign (the broad match modifier) is placed directly in front of each word that must be included in the users search phrase in order to trigger an ad. That could be one word or multiple words. An additional benefit is that Google can substitute similar words and misspellings, which allows you to trigger ads based upon a wider range of closely related search phrases.
  • Phrase Match "rubber balls" – Surrounding a keyword phrase with quotation marks makes the ad appear only when a user searches for the words "rubber balls" in that order, and possible with other search words. The ad may appear if someone searches for "red rubber balls", but not if they search for "balls made out of rubber".
  • Exact Match [rubber balls] – Surrounding a keyword phrase with brackets makes the ad appear only when a user searches for the words "rubber balls" in that word order and without any other search words. The ads will not appear is a user searches for "red rubber balls".
  • Negative Keyword – If you sell rubber balls, but do not want your ads to appear if someone searches for "free rubber balls" you can add negative keywords to either a campaign or individual Ad Groups by adding them to a list that is available when you scroll to the bottom of a page under the Keyword tab for any Ad Group. Some popular negative keywords are free, cheap, cheapest, surplus, ebay and craigslist. Negative keywords prevent ads from showing for searchers who are not looking for what you offer.

Max CPC – The maximum cost per click that has been bid for a set of keywords. The bid price is one factor that determines the rank position for an ad.

Search Total – The number of clicks, cost and other statistics related to ads displayed on Google search results pages as part of the Search network.

Served – Displays on individual ad statistics and shows the percentage of times that particular ad has displayed relative to other ads in an Ad Group. Google uses an automatic optimizer algorithm that displays more productive ads most often, so a low Served rate for an ad may indicate a need for rewording.

Status – The status of individual keyword phrases within an individual ad.

  • Normal – The ads for this keyword are showing at full delivery.
  • In Trial – The ads for this keyword are showing but do not meet Google’s quality threshold and may be slowed or disabled.
  • On Hold – The ads for this keyword are not being shown and do not meet Google’s quality threshold.
  • Disabled – The ads for this keyword are not showing any longer.

Google will automatically Disable keywords or place them In Trial or On Hold when the keywords are not being used in searches or when users are not clicking on the ads represented by the keywords. This helps focus the ads on the most productive keywords.

Individual Ads may also be disabled for using wording that does not meet ad quality guidelines

Google celebrates Les Paul with interactive guitar doodle - Gadgets

Google celebrates Les Paul with interactive guitar doodle

The latest in Google's series of "doodles" pays tribute to late American guitarist and inventor Les Paul on what would be his 96th birthday, June 9.

"For the next 24 hours on the Google homepage, you’ll find an interactive, playable logo inspired by the guitar developed by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee that made the sound of rock and roll possible," said Google in a June 8 blog post.

The interactive logo lets users strum away on a Google-shaped guitar by moving their mouse over the strings or tapping away on the keyboard.

Users in the US can record 30-second takes of their musical compositions by clicking the black "compose" button beside the logo. A second click on the button will display a link to the recording.

To get strumming, head to http://google.com/.

How to Get Facebook Likes - four Verified Methods

Get inventive with news and contests and details and you will encourage people today to include your Facebook web page. You want to build plenty of back links back again to your web page although. This will enhance your world wide web website traffic.

Facebook is a goldmine - for all those who know how to mine it. Dessert Gallery Bakery & Caf? is an individual these types of business. Based mostly in Houston, Texas, it identified that store visits enhanced by 36% for the reason that they had a Facebook fan page. Also, prospects who were their Facebook fans invested 45% extra, and business loyalty elevated by 41%.

A further company, The Heartstone Inn of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, saw a twenty% improve in earnings within six weeks of building their fan web page, and a 10-fold raise to their subscriber base.

Andrew Wilkins of St. Petersburg, Florida, was about to lose his restaurant because of to tough financial times in 2010. Simply because he had a fan page, there was a central hub for individuals to not only tune into and listen to his cry for assistance, but also to pass on the message. As a result, restaurant product sales went up forty%, and he was ready to maintain the doors of St. Pete Brasserie restaurant open, as perfectly as draw in possible traders.

What is it about Facebook fan pages that have the capability to grow small business revenues, and even flip all-around failing firms? Right here is a record of nine methods that promoting on Facebook working with fan pages can add to your bottom line:

one) Risk of spreading your communication virally. Although Facebook has taken out its "Recommend to Friends" function, there are other tactics of spreading your communication and creating a viral result. Posting position updates that engage fans can also engage fans' pals. When a position update is sent from a fan web page, it displays up the fans' newsfeeds, and this is typically how they see it. It also permits their buddies to see the standing update, and potentially join the fan page. There are also scripts available which let good friends to invite friends to invite good friends, and so on, that can explode the fan base. And, of program, the additional fans, the more eyes on your message, the more possible income.

    2) Targeted traffic to your web-site. If you have a web-site with the identical products/company as your fan page, linking the two with each other is a fantastic way to get far more visitors to the web site. People today stop by Facebook typically - each and every day, sometimes several times a day - to see what their pals are accomplishing, to play video games, look and feel at photographs, etc. How quite a few websites can boast similar levels or varieties of engagement?

If a fan would like more information on your organization/brand, while on your fan page, they can click on the Info tab, see hyperlinks to your internet site, and probably click on an individual. Consequently, much more eyes will possibly see the products and solutions and services on your web page.

    3) Staying engaging. Supporters enjoy to and want to be engaged. Engage them and they'll usually come back for a lot more.

    Facebook commerce
There are many companies that measure the amount of fans on Facebook in tens of millions. The rapid growth they have had the fan pages on Facebook, has happened in less than two years and many times in just months.

    • 23. Starbucks: 20,393,045
    • 31. Disney: 18,798,643
    • 34. MTV: 18,322,475
The number before the mark is the position that is between the fan pages with over 100 fans on Facebook.
As Facebook becomes tool for relationship marketing biggest brands, a question arises: is it better to have a Facebook fan page for a website?. Many global marketers wonder if it is necessary to maintain a company website or within five years the sites still exist.

    Social Media is About Engagement

By Michael W Farrell in Featured

socialmediaThis is not the time to let customers or profits slip through your fingers.
You need to make your business stronger, more successful, and ensure your customers are more loyal and responsive to your engagement with them.

Recently, Harry Dent, Jr. said that you should break free of provincial geographic thinking and focus on demographics. You should go after customers, able and willing to spend on what you sell, wherever they are, not where you are.

As a result, many marketing, media, technology, and advertising experts use social media forums as a way to champion the use of social media. They suggest a company, especially a small business on main street with a modest marketing budget, become better known, extend their reach, and increase their company’s sales using social media.

Here is an example of a teaser message recently transmitted in an email marketing campaign to small and medium sized businesses… the message says, “Social Media is the most explosively growing media of all-time and growing faster with each passing day with no slow-down in sight. It took radio 38 years to reach 50 million users. It took TV 13 years to reach 50 million users. Facebook added 100 million users in less than 9 months. And iPhone applications hit 1 BILLION in 9 months.”

Based on this message, it is easy for entrepreneurs to get seduced into thinking that by using Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, big sales are just around the corner.

However, social media should work in conjunction with traditional marketing and selling techniques such as relationship marketing within “old” social networks, cold calling, vertical marketing, and other effective prospecting activities.

Small business owners should take the time to learn how to maximize their use of social media but they should not rely on it to make their sales. Business owners need to learn how to use social media to engage their prospects and customers and how to get their prospects and customers talking about something that is important to them and the small business. This type of engagement is necessary and will ultimately get prospects and customers to take the action the business owner wants them to take… leading to a sale.

In order to make the best business use of social media, the small business owner needs to prepare a simple strategy with several guidelines to follow in the use of social media. The strategy and guidelines need to pinpoint the specific message to be communicated so that all employees using social media for the business know what direction their messages should take and how they should focus their posts. For example, is the company’s focus to improve customer service? Is it to enhance awareness of their products or services? Or, is it to boost their brand recognition? Each of these things would have a different yet consistent message for the employees of the business to follow.

For example, one insurance company uses Twitter and Facebook to let people know about all the philanthropic things they are doing for the community. All the posts are about events they are sponsoring and contributions they’re making. Employees know that they should post information about personal things they’re doing for the community, such as volunteering at the local animal shelter or helping out with Habitat for Humanity. With a clear guideline that the social media effort is to elevate philanthropic awareness it is easy for employees to know the kinds of things they should be doing on social media sites. They have a clear focus and a unified purpose.

Another company in the retail industry uses social media to improve customer service. All their posts highlight things they are doing internally to improve the customer experience, what they are doing online to make shopping easier and how they are handling phone inquires to deliver a memorable shopping experience. They also regularly ask customers how they would like the company to improve customer service. With that as the key message, all of the company’s employees are focused on problem solving and on making the customers happy.

Therefore, a good social media strategy, with employee guidelines, is far more than a list of good and bad words or topics. Instead, the strategy with guidelines needs to focus on the core message the small business wants to portray along with the best ways to spread that core message.

The guidelines should cover the following topics.
    Building Trust
The business employees should use their posts to build a reputation of trust among clients, media, and the public. When they are reaching out to others on social media sites, they should take every opportunity to build a reputation of trust and to establish themselves as a credible and transparent representative of the company.

    Being Transparent
When participating in any online community, the small business employees should disclose their identities and affiliations with the organization, clients, and their professional and / or personal interest.

    Being Direct
When creating posts and content, the business employees should be direct, informative, and brief.

    Giving Due Credit
If the business employees post copyrighted materials, they should identify the original sources.

    Self-Editing
The small business employees should always evaluate each posting’s accuracy and truthfulness. Before posting any online material, they need to ensure that the material is accurate, truthful, and without factual error. This includes doing a spell and grammar check on everything.

    Responsibility
Make sure the business employees know that they are responsible for what they post. Negative or questionable posts should not be tolerated.

    Being Professional
When posting comments, the business employees should refrain from writing about controversial or potentially inflammatory subjects, including politics, sex, religion, or any other non-business related subjects. The tone of their comments should be respectful and informative and never condescending or “loud.”

    Privacy
The business employees should never disclose proprietary or confidential information. This includes product releases, service updates, and employee information not made public yet.

    Obeying the Rules
All business employees should follow local, state, or federal laws and regulations. Ultimately, their online activities will be a reflection on the company.

Today’s social media tools are great for business building, provided that the small business owner and their employees know how to use them for the company’s ultimate benefit.

Therefore, the small business owner needs to determine why their company is using social media sites and then let that purpose be known throughout the entire company. Additionally, they need to implement clear social media guidelines that small company employees can follow in order to further their company’s mission.

Ultimately, when small businesses know how they are supposed to use today’s social media tools, they can do so with focus and purpose, leading the small company confidently into the communication age.

Reliable Internet Marketing Tips You Should Know

    Author: George Buck

It's a truth of internet marketing that so many approaches and tactics exist to sell online, but even given that huge numbers of people start a business online, produce nothing, and walk away. It's our pleasure to offer you a handful of proven internet marketing tips, and all you have to do is supply the action.
Most reasonably informed online marketers are aware of at least some strategies for generating traffic. If you're not having targeted visitors coming in, then you obviously won't be able to make any sales. One of the most sought after methods of traffic generation is search engine marketing. The ideal situation is to rank in the top three for good volume search terms. This is why you shouldn't avoid search engine optimization and instead focus a good amount of your time and energy on it. What you do need to do is learn about it, then put your knowledge into action and keep at it.
There are many Internet marketers who only depend on the search engine traffic to make all their sales. However you do need to be prepared to spend time, money, lots of effort and hard work to get there. You will need to pay special attention to your keyword phrases because some are worthless compared to others. As time goes by, you'll realize how valuable search engine traffic is, mainly because it doesn't cost you a cent. Search marketing is a long-term strategy, but it's one that can be profitable for who knows how many years.
The second important Internet marketing tip is to leverage the power of press releases to get more traffic and exposure to your online business. Whether you have a brand new website to announce, or a new product you've created; you can almost instantly create a powerful buzz of traffic by doing press releases. You can easily find quite a few online press release distribution websites, and then just choose those that work best for you. Of course there are guidelines and rules to follow such as proper PR format, and another courtesy is to make your PR a release about something newsworthy. People in your target market will notice your press release, and the expected result from that is to produce traffic.
Testing is something that can literally change and transform your business overnight, but really very few marketers do it. You can test and optimize your marketing and ad campaigns for the highest possible ROI, and that is how you increase your conversions. If you want to test a new traffic source, then by all means give it a test and find out how it works for you.
We hope you will benefit from the internet marketing tips we've shown you. It's not hard to do, but you will need to put positive action into place as soon as possible.

    • Another good thing about this website design is that maintenance cost is not that high and customization is also quite simple. Once you are through the installation process, you are going to see a default template.
    • When you opt for wordpress design, you do not need to worry about the fact that how search engines will react as the design is search engine friendly.
In this day and age when the competition is so intense, creative web design is an absolute must if you want to attain success through your website. You may ask at this juncture: What is the role of creativity in the success of a website? The answer of this question lies in the fact that expectations of consumers have increased tremendously thanks to all the advancement that is being made in the technology front. If the look of your website does not excite your target audience, it is not going to be a success even if it is equipped with high quality content. With creative web design, you do not need to worry about such things.

Once your website starts gaining traffic and you get to know about who your target audience are, that is the time when you need to invest on website design. If the initial response is not that good, it is a clear sign that something is wrong with the concept of your website.

6 Reasons Why Q&A Sites Can Boost Your SEO in 2011 (Despite Google's Farmer Update)

A lot of SEO predictions for 2011 were published in the end of 2010, while not many marketers mentioned the increasing popularity of Q&A sites. I think that it could be a great opportunity to exploit this new rising phenomenon for our marketing efforts while it's still fresh.

Why shouldn't you worry about Google's Content farm update?
I'm pretty sure that you're already familiarized with the Google's recent farmer update, and might think that Q&A sites are useless now. But if you take a closer look, there are a bunch of quality Q&A sites that did not suffer at all and can still be used for your marketing efforts. It's important to use only these kinds of sites as part of the following techniques, to get the most value for your efforts.
I believe that Google (and other search engines) should try and fit their offering to users according to changes on the web, so completely ignoring a rising concept such as Q&A platforms will be like shooting themselves in the foot.

Success Strategies - Is It Really Luck?

    Jump Now E-Zine ( Vol. 8 - #2)
    by Carol Pierce

    Is It Really Luck?

Do you often wonder why some businesses, some organizations, and some people are so daggone lucky? Do you often wish you could learn their secret?  Well, you can!

Successful people, businesses, and organizations understand that true success is not based on luck.  They appear to be so lucky because they refuse to sit around wishing or waiting for what they want to magically appear.

Instead, they figure out what they really want and what they will no longer allow to get in their way.  Then they take every step possible to make what they want possible, no matter how impossible it may seem or how long it may take.

Because they're so prepared, so focused and so determined, they take immediate action to get what they really want the moment the opportunity appears, no matter how illogical that jump now may seem or how unexpected it may be when it does occur.

So determine what you really want and what you no longer want.  Remain persistent, constantly paying close attention to every door which opens the moment it opens.  Pretty soon you'll be getting more of what you really want in your life, with your business or with your organization.  Pretty soon people will be wishing they are "lucky" like you!

    I Like It! Baton Rouge-based Denicola’s Foods

Denicola’s Foods creators Kim and David Denicola have given a lot of thought to the emblematic Cajun dish, dirty rice. Kim grew up in Houma, where her grandmother made dirty rice frequently with a recipe handed down from her own grandmother. But preparing it took time, and Kim, who was once a single, working mother, wanted to shorten the process for busy families. After trial and error – and lots of dirty rice - the couple launched a line of instant food mixes in January 2010. “We spent months making and testing different versions of dirty rice,” recalls Kim. “I’d make notes about what was wrong, adjust the dry seasonings, and make it all over again. Our kids were some of our main tasters, because children’s responses are always so honest.” On the nights Kim and David finally found the right formulas for their dirty rice and other products, Kim scribbled notes furiously. Then she made the recipe again to be sure.

A year later, Baton Rouge-based Denicola’s Foods is on shelves in two dozen regional stores, including the Bet-R Store and Side of the Road Seafood in the Capital City, the IGA and Feliciana Supermarket in St. Francisville and several Rouse’s Markets throughout South Louisiana. Their product line-up includes mixes for dirty rice, jambalaya, pastalaya, gumbo, etouffee and bisque, and they plan to roll out four new products this spring. Consumers can also order on-line.

Creating a cook’s shortcut might have been the original impetus for the venture, but Denicola says what keeps it going is the desire to create a family business for the couple’s five children, especially 11-year-old son, Matthew, who has cerebral palsy. “We want him to have something that’s his, a business where he can work and contribute,” says Kim. Matthew and his siblings already help sort, label and deliver products around the dining room table from their home in Baton Rouge’s Tara neighborhood.

“It’s definitely a family affair,” says Kim. “It’s a lot of work, but incredibly satisfying.”
